The Filmaker's Handbook
By: Steven Ascher and Edward Pincus

Buy The Filmmaker's Handbook from Amazon.com This book is simply amazing, if you have to have only one book about video production, this is it.

The book is written as a guide to creating stories from moving images. It covers the fundamentals of both video and film. It covers how both systems produce an image, how lenses and filters affect your image, shooting techniques, lighting, audio recording systems and techniques... editing sound an images. (Attention is spent on the special needs of dialogue editing. The book covers Film to Video transfers, film lab development, production and even distribution. The only major production concerns not covered with the intent of performing the task are scriptwriting and compositing, or special effects.

While the scope of the book is wide, the information is current and relevant to today's production environment. No matter what your role is in that environment.

Of special value are the appendixes. They include a great deal of specific technical advice from adjusting a video monitor to conforming a film to the original or even tables for lens angle and focusing.

The only weakness of the book is from the perspective of a pure video producer, who may not be able to utilize the extensive film information. For such a person, The Low Budget Video Bible may be more appropiate. Then again at these prices, there really is no obstacle to owning both.
