What is ENG ?

ENG stands for Electronic News Gathering.

ENG is what you see on the evening news when a reporter is live on location. Typically, from a technical production standpoint, it involves shoulder mounted camcorders (most stations use BetaSP, but more are using some form of digital video.), wireless microphones and other easily carried and quick to move versatile equipment.

One of the hallmarks of ENG production is varied and unexpected shooting environments including poor weather, lighting and often adverse access to your subject. Cameras, camerapeople and associated equipment have to be a lot more rugged and versatile than their studio counterparts, while managing to be lightweight. All audio will often be recorded by a single camera. The photojournalist or "photog" often is also the interviewer, director and producer.
