(a.k.a Electronic Zoom) Digital Zoom is a feature of most camcorders which extends the zoom range of the unit. Normally zoom is determined by the lens of your camera. This is called the optical zoom. Optical zooms always give the best performance with any given camera/lens combination. With digital zoom, once you have reached the limit of what your camera's lens can do, a little computer in your camera goes to work. This scales the size of your image by making pixels in the center larger. The problem is that this causes what use to be a tiny point of color to become a block of color. The camera tries to smooth out these blocks of color using a technique know as antialiasing. The end effect is a soft, or seemingly out of focus image. Whenever it is an option it is recommended that you turn off the digital zoom features of your camcorder. If you frequently need to get close ups from far away from your subject, it may be time to consider a better camera with a nicer lens. If that is not practical consider the use of an extender.
