Just Noticeable Difference JND's are differences in sensory input that, under standardized conditions, are noticeable half of the time. The reason a statistical measure is utilized is because of the variability in human perception of sensory inputs. A stable, or concrete, numerical value can not be accurately determined. Generally speaking a JND of 4 or less is undetectable in video applications. For sound applications a JND of is approximately equal to 1 Decibel. JND measurement has been developed for commercial use by Sarnoff corporation. They are included in a number of industry picture quality analysis tools.
